In 1998 I joined a board at parentsplace.com for women who were expecting babies in December of 1998. There got to be quite a group of us. After our babies were born, we moved to a board for women who had HAD babies in December of 1998. We saw December of 1999 and December of 2001... we had some tiffs along the way... a few people left with hurt feelings over different situations. But we for the most part stuck together. Boy... what a group we were too! Career mom's with one kid, SAHM's with 6 kids, single moms, older moms, conservative moms, liberal moms... religious moms, atheist moms... but we were all moms, and we all lived our lives the best way we knew how for ourselves.
Then the 2004 election came around. And things got ugly. Really. Really. Ugly. And they ended up so ugly that a group broke off and formed their own group (it was more than just the election, but that was the breaking point).
So... I'm saying that here, now, because politics get messy, and politics bring forth emotions, and we women tend to be REALLY good and REALLY bad with emotions.
SO... to that end. I have a political platform I follow. I know who I want to vote for. I don't 100% agree with their platforms or beliefs, but after careful study, they are who I support. Many of you have decided whom you want to vote for. Some of you have picked the same group I have, some have not. Here's my request & pledge.
Request - When commenting on my blog, I ask that you be respectful of my opinions. You do NOT have to agree with them, and if you want to intelligently debate them, I will happily do that, but please don't come and just bash. Kinda that whole "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"
Pledge - I promise that first of all, for the most part, I won't get very partisan on my blog. I am a politics junkie... I love to see this process work from all sides. And if I do bring politics to my board, for the most part it will be bi-partisan. ALSO, I pledge when I visit YOUR blogs, I will be respectful of YOUR beliefs and only say nice things.
We live in an amazing country where we get to be so much a part of our political process. We tend to forget that and take it for granted. I don't ever want to do that.
We also are all individuals, all with different experiences and beliefs and thoughts and priorities. We are never going to all agree. But isn't that wonderful? How boring would life be if we were all the same. But we all need to respect those who ARE different from us. Someone who believes something different than I do isn't stupid, or an idiot, or mis-informed... they're just coming at life from a different place than me. And that's ok. They can do that. I just ask for the same respect back from them.
So... there... there's my little tirade for today. I've REALLY enjoyed getting to know you ladies, and I REALLY don't want politics to ruin any more friendships in my life than it already has.
Thank you and Goodnight

Nicely said. I feel that all people are entitled to their own beliefs and ideals. You don't have to agree with them but you do have to respect them and the person. I try not to put people down for what they believe.
Don't worry, I won't hold it against you that you like politics. *wink wink*
Well done Lizzie. You don't have to worry about my input on this. Just well... because.
I'm so glad politics excite you. Love ya bunches Beaverkins.
Well said! I don't 'do' politics, never did and I do not get it and I don't want to. (SMILE)
AMEN!! I never discuss politics or religion on my blog, because I know so many people who read it will have a different opinion.
By the way, I was on a board for Sept 2001, and we still are good friends, too! In fact, 2 on my blog roll, Jiggety Jigg and Punky Monkey's, are 2 of the mommies!!!
I agree 100%. I'm excited and inquisitive about some interesting stuff that made the news today............I wonder.....I wouldn't have even known if someone hadn't called and told me. Never heard of her, but I like what I'm hearing. Am I being vague but specific enough? Let me know.
Well said
you got a deal...although you will be hard pressed to find politics on my site as I am shy about getting into it KWIM
I agree with you 100%
respect
This is why I don't think I will ever mention politics on my blog...it can be so touchy and you can hurt someones feelings without meaning to! But I respect how you put it and agree 100%
Okay...I thought you brought it up first! I am sorry if anything I said offended you...it was never my intent!
Beautifully said. Everyone is intitled to their their opinion... mine is just right. JUST KIDDING. I love sharing.
I'm the opposite. Don't follow it much, don't get too excited over it. But well said. Like a lady!
I could not agree more! :) I know what I believe in and I have no problem listening to what other people believe in but I hate when people tell me my beliefs are wrong! They can't be wrong...they are mine! That being said...I am so excited for this political season...it is monumental and a first for our country. We are either going to have an African American man as president or a woman as second in command. No matter who you like or what you believe you have to think that is pretty darn cool! Here's to all staying friends and getting along! I may cut and paste your post on my blog....just kidding! I may link it though because I sincerely feel the same way!
Do you hear that? That's me applauding you over the mountains in Tennessee!!! Well said and politely said too. Politics is exciting to watch and hear though, isn't it?
good for you for laying down the law on your blog...me: i don't want to offend anyone b/c polotics and religion are just so personal and mean something different to each person...i just try to keep my thoughts and views about things as neutral as possible...and i won't say ANYTHING about who i'm voting for, it'd rather not end up debating over which fella would make a better president...and yadda, yadda, yadda on that topic.
thanks for stopping by my place yesterday, it was great to see ya! and i hope that you enjoyed your look-see around my blog!
I am not all that politically inclined, so I know we'll never have a falling out over that! It's funny how that can drive people apart though! Have a great weekend!
as a member of that board...I'm staying FAR FAR FAR away from politics this election. :)
Although you know my political leanings already.
So well said. I think that our blogs are "our" space. As you know, I have already expressed some of my feelings about the election. Not everybody agrees with me, but that is O.K. I am just glad that I have the freedom to have the forum to state my opinion
Great post, girlfriend!
I use to work IN DC.....that is ONE political place. I lived it, breathed it and LOVED IT. It is exciting and there is electric in the AIR and it is just plain WOW but alas I am now just a stay at home MOM in GA and MOST MOMMIES here do not even KNOW about my Secret past in DC....OK that Had nothing to do with YOUR post but I loved you post and YOU ROCK!
I'm totally not knowledgeable enough to debate a mouse about politics, so normally I keep my mouth shut. I wish I liked it more and I really need to do research on the candidates other than the two making daily headlines. I think far too often people are afraid to agree to disagree. Its unfortunate.
So nicely put. I have really strong opinions. But...I tend to keep them to myself. Actually, I would say that people who know me around here really don't know what my opinions are. And assume that they are something that they are not because we homeschool. I let them think that because I don't want to get into an argument. And I probably wouldn't bring it up on my blog. Even though I have really strong opinions - I am soooo non-confrontational :-)
There's a great political debate on Pinching Your Pennies right now and I am staying out of it!!!
I wanted to keep politics for most part off my blog. I wasn't going to comment much on a new subject. But tonight I got mad and ranted.
But like you, I know how people can get so upset over these things, so I didn't want to offend, but I got offended so if I offend, oh well (this is on my blog, lol)
On my parent board for down syndrome, we have a special place for "those" kinds of post, it is the Hot Topic area, where you can argue and debate in a good way, if you can't, you should not go into that section!! lol
I'm really kinda scared to go read the blogs today.
Very well said (and gave no clue as to your afiliation, either). Nicely done. I normally keep my politics to myself, as I, too, lost a dear friend after he went off the deep end politcally and I wouldn't go along for the ride...
I agree with everything you said!Have a great Labor Day weekend!!
Thanks...for the nice post...I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings or offend anyone in anyway! My very best friend and I differ politically...but I know she is always one of the smartest girls in the room and I know she feels the same way about me...we just differ on politics!
So, do you have a hot tub or not?
Just kidding, it's my first time here.
I love how well you put that and I agree 100%.
Now, can I change the name and forward that to my family????
Enjoy the weekend!
I bet you and my mom could have a lot of fun together- especially if you don't fall on the same side of the spectrum- she, too is a Major political junkie!
Very well put. I have pretty strong feelings too, but I keep them to myself. Or I take them out on hubby. He's a good sounding board. LOL!
It makes me sad that you even have to post something like this. Can't we all just get along?
Nicely said! I think you and I are voting differently, but that's okay. We're still Americans and we love this country.
I noticed when I started speaking out about who I liked, some people don't comment on my blog anymore.
Good stuff, girl. It echos my theme..."Can't we all just get along?" I have conservative & liberal readers, and I'm friends with all of 'em. It's not an issue...we're Americans and we have the right to believe as we want. End of story.
But I'm still voting for you!
Very well said!! It's nice to hear that allot of people feel the same why I do! 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all'
Great post....you said it all and very tactfully.
I put two posts on my page recently but noticed that NO ONE touched it with comments. I found that very interesting. But that is okay. :) At least people know where I stand.
I totally understand your reasoning and don't think one's political affiliations is the way to choose our blog friends. It's just a bonus if we DO think alike.
I think I'm actually mature enough *now* to talk about politics (and even religion!) with my online friends ... I just hope they are, too! That whole board breakup was pretty darn emotional and it still kind of stings when I think about it. All I know is that I've mellowed waaaay out since then and losing friends over politics is pretty sad. : (
