Shoulder Injury - 10th grade, riding my bike home from piano lessons, a Dominoes driver comes out of an alley and clips my front tire. Piano books and me go flying. I landed on my left shoulder, and while it wasn't dislocated, it was badly hurt and I can now predict the weather with said shoulder. The kicker here, I didn't tell my mom what happened because I thought I'd get in trouble for getting hit by a car. Later that evening we went to church and this nice lady comes FLYING to my mother, asking if I'm okay because she saw the whole thing. Yeah... I got in trouble. For lying.
Hand Injury #1 - I have a scar on my hand from a hot spot light exploding during the filming of the action sequence of Indiana Avocado and the Counter of Doom.
Hand Injury #2 - I once went to the ER for a hang nail. Yes, a hang nail. It was infected. I won't go into details because I know there are women with weakish stomachs reading.
Hand Injury #3 - I played volleyball in high school. I wish I could tell you this injury was from a miraculous save at the end of a game, causing us to win the state championship. But, I can't. I was from putting my shoes in the locker before the game. I accidentally ran my fist into the bench in front of the lockers and dislocated my knuckle.
I have NUMEROUS scars on my legs from various bike incidents, but I will share the story of just one more.
I was headed from my dorm to the main buildings my freshman year of college. There was a picturesque bridge you had to cross and then some stairs going up a hill. I was running UP the steps when I tripped. I didn't fall right away, but I started lurching forward and knew falling was eminent. For some reason my brain decided that the puddle of mud NEXT to the stairs was the optimal place to fall. So my body, being the compliant obedient body it is, fell. In the mud, which was hiding the top of a sewer drain, which cut my leg. There I am, sitting in the mud, wet, bleeding, I look up, and who's coming the other direction? Jason Peterson. The boy I had a crush on. Earth, swallow me now. Actually, just finish the job.
It was HOT today. 102 degrees. Hot. I work both jobs on Mondays, so by the time I get home at 6:30, I just want to sink into my "big butt chair", pull up the ottoman and veg. So tonight, I did that very thing. Adjusting the fan so that it would include me in its cooling swath, I sank back into my chair and focused, just barely, on the tv. I was half way between awake and a complete coma when I become aware that Essie is screaming in terror from the basement. Now, big butt chairs with ottomans are NOT easy to fly out of. I threw myself over the ottoman and raced through the kitchen, dodging Katie's play school toy bus, and raced down the stairs. The screams continued. In my mind's eye, I tried to prepare myself for what I might find. An appendage removed by an errant scrapbook photo cutter? A bone jutting from a leg after a poorly executed (not to mention not allowed) jump from the couch? Blood pouring from some orifice after a meeting with a tinkertoy? I look up, and there she is, tears pouring down her face, panic in her voice... and then my eyes are drawn to the culprit of the screams.
She has a plastic bowl... stuck.. on her knee. Yes, a plastic, orange, IKEA bowl suctioned cupped to her knee. She is terrified that she will have to go to the hospital to have it removed. I know.. I shouldn't have laughed. I should have been totally consoling and comforting, which I did do... but I laughed. I laughed hard. I wish I could have taken a picture of that face. SHEER terror. I bent down, broke the suction with my finger, and freed her poor little kneecap from it's plastic prison. And laughed some more. Eventually she also saw the humor in it.
Looks so innocent, doesn't it?

I forgot to add this - Miss Essie (who is in San Diego for the summer with Grandma & Grandpa) leaves today for a road trip. They are going to Phoenix tonight to go to a German restaurant where a friend plays the accordion on Friday nights, then tomorrow they go to Meteor Crater in Arizona, then Sunday & Monday they will be at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, then Tuesday they go to Durango, Colorado to ride this train thingy on Wednesday, then Thursday they go to Arches National Park in Utah, then Friday they to go Vegas for 2 days and then home on Sunday. I am SOOOOOOOOOOO jealous!!!!!
