I follow Mike Huckabee on Facebook. I like him. Not everything about him, but I like him.
Today he posted a link to a story about a cartoon in the Imperial Valley Press in El Centro, California. Here is the cartoon.
Well if you aren't from around those parts, this probably makes no sense. Let me help it make sense for you. There is a gentleman who is running for congress in that area. His name is Nick Popaditch. Here's a picture of him:
Nick was a Marine gunnery sergeant who lost the sight in his right eye during the war in Iraq in 2004.
Now... lots of people are up in arms about the completely distasteful cartoon. Here's what Huck said about it:
For The Imperial Valley Press to publish a cartoon that makes light of the war injuries suffered by Nick is flat out offensive and wrong – not to mention what a disregard and disdain it displays for all our veterans. Let me be clear, our veterans past and present deserve our deepest gratitude. They do not deserve to be the subject of mocking, ridicule and disgusting attacks like this one.
I agree with Huck.
However... let's look at some of the responses on Huck's Facebook page:
- Another looser who doesn't understand the sacrifice of soldiers so they can spew their poison.
- Absolutely horrible! Those people are total lunatics! I wish California would break off from the U.S. and float on its own out in the ocean. Let THEM set up their OWN government... when someone attacks them, we can tell them... "you're on your own!"
- I wonder how many of the libs serve in the military????? Maybe it's time to send some of them over, there are waaaaaay too many here with toooooo much time on their hands.
- I'm sure this proud Marine has taken the high rode on this one...This is one of the reason's he served and suffered for..."Freedom of the press." Even though I think the artist should be hung from the highest tree.....
- When does this type of disgrace stop? I think the people that not only draw these cartoons and the publishers should go to war and see what it is like! But then, they are gutless beings!
Really? How is any of that not JUST as bad???
When are we going to stop? Matthew 5:39 says "But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also." It doesn't say to slap back.
When did we all decide to take the low road on everything?
(Just a note - I do NOT think that Huckabee thinks the same thing as the people commenting on his Facebook, it just happened to be where I saw what I did.)

The Bible also says to repay evil with good and thereby heap burning coals on your enemy's head. Basically, we should be shaming those who do us wrong by our love to all people.
I agree with you. And I often find myself shamefully guilty of being on the low road.
Good point, Lizzy.
I have lots of super conservative friends who blame the 'libs' for the economy and the war and the bailouts ...they forget that 'their guys' started this whole crap shoot. They are usually the first to pound the 'free speech' pillar when it suits them.
I choose not to even participate in the discussion.
EXACTLY!!!!! Drives me crazy, and as a result I engage the whole political process far too little. You said that perfectly. Thank you.
I hope you'll post a link to this on Huckabee's page. He is one guy who I do respect and who could have some influence on this issue. It would be nice if he held the bar high for his followers.
I have to agree with Swirl Girl.
Sadly, HTL there are more people that take the low road than even know what the high road is. Every where you look someone is calling someone out about something but being so disgusting about it and inhumane about it that it just makes you scratch your head. And pray!
Great post Liz, and a good reminder to all of us.
Excellent point! It's not our job to revenge someone by calling them names or putting them down. Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord.
Those who can't spell the word "loser" are loosers, don'tcha think? Amen, sister!
I love it when you get on your soapbox!
Amen, sister. Hate is hate, no matter which side it hails from. Sadly, there is plenty of it from all sides.
(Ironic that Swirl Girl chose this opportunity to take a dig at conservatives, yes?)
Debate used to be about discussion; now it's just about who yells the loudest. There is no conversation when no one listens.
thats a very interesting post that you have written here, its better to be good rather than bad and lets leave god to deal with bad people!! let be good outselves
IMO people take stuff too seriously to begin with. Admittedly the cartoon is offensive but that's what political cartoonist DO. They create dramatic cartoons that provoke. For every conservative cartoon there is a liberal one to match...
