Single Mom Lizzy

This year on American Idol there are several single mom's.... and every time Ryan introduces them it's "And here's Single Mom _________" like that's their given name.

Well... once I make it to American Idol (and they do away with the age limits) he'll have to introduce me that way. As of about 3:00 this afternoon I officially became "Single Mom Lizzy".

Going to the courthouse I managed to work myself into quite a tizzy. Because I was doing a "pro se" divorce, I didn't have a lawyer or anything, just me and the judge. I had been warned by the people at Legal Aid that some of the judges will ask LOTS of questions, so I was trying to be prepared for anything.

Going into the courtroom there was another guy getting a divorce. He went up to the stand. The judge asked when he got married - May 2006. When did you separate. October 2006. When was the last time you saw your wife? October 2006. WOW... that threw me for a loop!!!!

So it was my turn. I went up to the stand, said I would be honest Lizzy, he read the paper work... and this is what happened:

Him - What day were you married?

Me - October 25th, 1997.

Him - What day did you separate?

Me - September 14th, 2007.

Him - You had 2 children.

Me - Yes sir.

Him - And you have arranged for their support and care?

Me - Yes sir.

Him - You may step down, my court clerk will meet you in the lobby with a your signed decree

The end. Done. Single Mom Lizzy.

So... how does it feel? Weird... Sad... Free... Independent... Brave... Scared... Alone... Failure...Success...

Hmmm...

So.... life.... please welcome...

*insert elbow-wrenching Ryan Seacrast arm fling here*

Congrats!?!

I am sure it will take a bit of adjustment, but you have been doing it solo for over a year now and have handled it great so far. Best of luck. Sending many warm fuzzy thoughts.

Here's to the rest of your life!! One of my all time favorite quotes says, "If your dream falls and breaks into a million pieces, don't be afraid to pick up a piece and make a new dream." Good luck to you!

Well, now, Ms. B. You're free to marry the kinda creepy lawyer from Legal Aid that was hitting on you.

This is an auspicious day.

Congrats! I hope it was a good day for you. (I remember the day of my divorce so fondly; I partied HARD!) But I know it's a hard day for some people. By the time mine was finally final, I was SO ready.
You have such a great future ahead of you!! I wish you the best, Single Mom Lizzy.

I know how weird it feels. When I got my divorce I didn't know if I should laugh with joy from being free, or cry with sadness because I felt like I had failed myself in life. Now I have a girls day with my bestfriend on that day, and we shop for something that makes us feel pretty!
Now I have Hubby, and my world is Wonderful!!

You waited and waited and it finally arrived. I pray that God will fill that space in your heart with love and new goals from Him!

Congratulations, Lizzie. It's done.

My own divorce left me with the same mixed emotions. My kids were 12, 3 and 2. The BEST part is that now that they are grown ups, each has told me (several times) how proud they are of me for the good job I did being a single mom. Now that's a REWARD!!!

Britt said...

Well, congratulations on completion .. on closure .. and on new beginnings =-)

I'd say "congratulations," except I know what you are feeling is bittersweet. So, good luck on the single mom road ahead, OK?
