Are you wondering why I care about Mr. Tombaugh?

Well, my Grandma B and Clyde are 4th Cousins, once removed. (I promise for those of you that just said "I never understand that once removed stuff - to do a blog on how to understand all that).

Here's a little about Clyde:

Clyde Tombaugh was born in 1906 to an Illinois farm family. As a boy he developed an interest in stargazing that was encouraged by both his father and his uncle. The first telescope Clyde ever looked through belonged to his uncle. The first telescope he ever owned was bought from Sears. By 1925, Clyde was dissatisfied with his store bought telescope and decided to build one for himself. Clyde's father took a second job to pay for the materials needed to build it. The telescope Clyde built in 1925 was only the first of more than thirty telescopes he was to build over his lifetime.

In 1928 Clyde completed the construction of a very accurate 23-centimeter reflector. The mount for this telescope was built from part of the crankshaft from a 1910 Buick and discarded parts from a cream separator! Nevertheless, it was with this telescope that Clyde made the observations responsible for a job offer from the Lowell Observatory. Clyde made very detailed drawings of his telescopic observations of Jupiter and Mars. He sent the drawings to astronomers at the Lowell Observatory asking for their comments and suggestions. What he received instead was an offer to come to Lowell to work as a junior astronomer. Clyde accepted the job and joined the search for Percival Lowell's "Planet X", a planet beyond Neptune. Clyde Tombaugh's job was to photograph one small piece of the night sky at a time. He then had to carefully examine and compare the photos in an effort to detect an unidentified moving point of light that might be a planet. Clyde Tombaugh photographed 65% of the sky and spent thousands of hours examining photographs of the night sky. After ten months of very hard work, sometimes working through the night in an unheated dome, Clyde Tombaugh discovered an object he named Pluto. For many years, Pluto was considered to be the ninth planet in our solar system. However, as astronomers learned more about the planets and also about a new group of objects known as the Kuiper Belt Objects, it became clear that Pluto was more like the objects in that belt than the other eight planets. In August 2006, Pluto was re-classified as a dwarf planet.

So - now that you know about Clyde, please make sure to great everyone on Friday with a big hug and a "Happy Pluto Day"!!!!!!

OOO- questions!!

Do you have any "famous" relatives? What are they famous (or infamous) for? What days do you think we should recognize?

OH - and I'm going to leave you with an Essie funny. We went through McDonald's tonight, and the guy who was giving us our food was African American. Essie said "Mom, he looks like the guy Daddy used to work with. Remember? He was black and let me play with his balls?"

SNORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is so interesting! I think it stinks that they consider Pluto not a planet anymore.
Well I still do Clyde!!

Happy Pluto day Lizzie!

Clyde is a cutie pie!

My grandpa (also a cutie pie in his day) used to smoke cigars. He wrote a letter to Beechnut telling them of his idea to put a piece of string under the tightly-wrapped cigar. One would pull the string, and the paper would tear making it easy to open. Voila...the pull-skein is invented. Beechnut sent my grandpa $25 and that was that.

To my knowledge, there is (as of yet) no "Pull-skein Day" but if there was, I'd surely wish you a happy one!

That is SO awesome you are related to Clyde! How cool would that be to discover a PLANET?!!

I have a family member who was an admiral in the British Navy...and my dad's cousin is a very successful bestselling author.

I cannot wait for the blog post on the once removed thing. I really don't understand it :-)

Famous relatives...Davy Crockett. And what is really cool is that Cindy - my best friend - her husband is also related to Davy Crockett. So I am distant cousins with her husband. And her girls. But not with her! :-)

My grandfather was on the Ed Sullivan show. He was a big band leader at the Hotel Pierre in New York City back in the 50's & 60's.

Oh my. Essie's comment? Huh-larious.

Emmy got in trouble the other night and daddy had to lay down the law and after she was punished, she said with tears in her eyes, "Mommy.....? Will you tackle daddy for me?"

Eye yi yi......

Good news! For Clyde and the rest of us, too. I was having a really hard time coming up with a new neumonic device to remember the planets. Now I don't have to.

I think I had a relative that was hung as a horse thief. Down south someplace. We really do not talk about him to much though:}
Congratulations, Clyde and Happy Pluto Day to everyone!!!

The "reclassification" of Pluto, done by only four percent of the IAU, most of whom are not planetary scientists, is not accepted by many professional and amateur astronomers. It was immediately opposed in a petition of hundreds of professional astronomers led by Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto. Stern and like-minded scientists continue to view Pluto as a planet, not as a former planet, and many are working to get the wrongful demotion overturned.

Clyde is cool. Pluto is still a planet in my mind and always will be. I hope it gets reinstated.

I'm not related to anyone famous, but my half-brother is related to Jesse James on his dad's side.

Essie played with a black guy's balls! Snort!

My great uncle was Jack Elam. Did you ever see Cannonball Run? He was the crazy doctor. Yep, that side of my family are a real bunch of lookers.

We're very distantly related to Loretta Lynn, IIRC. Also, my great-great or so grandmother's last name was Presley and she lived in TN. We don't have enough records to prove a relationship to Elvis, but we suspect it. You can tell Essie that one. *G*

Spirit of Ashes said...

Oh and I forgot to comment on Pluto! I totally think it should be reinstated as a planet.

Essie!!! LOL

Poor Clyde .. all that work only to have his planet downgraded. Bummer.

Cool info. Go Clyde, go Clyde!

Sheesh, look at all you people related to important people. I got nothing. Guess I'll just have to become famous so my posterity has something cool to say. And Clyde...Pluto will always be a planet to me.

Ok, laughing hysterically at Essie's comment. ROFLMAO!

Anyway, I know I have at least one famous person in my genealogy and that is the writer, Pearl Buck. I know it's on my maternal grandfather's side, but I forget the exact relation. Working on the family tree is something I'm hoping to hit hardcore on next year. You know, once I catch up on my scrapbooking. Right.
