A Word or Two

I'm taking at class at church on Wednesday nights called "The Gospel and Politics". Last night was our second class, and it was really good. A nice discussion about our responsibilities as Christians and as citizens of our town, state, country and world. We are right now reading portions of the book A Public Faith written by Charles Drew. I want to share a paragraph out of it with you:

We must take care, as God's people, to stay on track. We must protect
the church in its high and specific calling, and resist the ever-present
temptation to draw it as an institution into the important but short-term
solutions of politics. We must also pray for the whole world,
remembering as we do so that the God we love is neither an American nor a
capitalist, and that he has managed quite ably through centuries of monarchs and despots to save his people, to train them, and to use them in the forward march of his kingdom.

No party has the corner on God... and to think they do is an insult to Him. His power and works are not dependant on a certain party being in power. He gives them the power... and he takes it away... according to his plan.

Thought 2:

Where were you 7 years ago today? I was in San Diego. I was watching tv, getting ready for work. Essie was 2 and sitting on my bed. They were talking about this plan hitting the World Trade Center, and I remember thinking what a major accident that was, and how badly things would have to go for an airplane to hit a building like that. And we were watching, Essie sitting on my lap, as the 2nd plane hit. And the whole world tipped. And I held Essie, knowing that the world she would grow up in wasn't going to be like the one I did... and at that point I had know idea what else was going to happen. For months after that, every time Essie saw an airplane she would say "Uh oh - airplane - FIRE!" I headed to work, but no one worked... we all sat in the lobby of our office, huddled around a tv. Watching the pentagon. Watching the drama with the plane which crashed in Pennsylvania.... Wondering when it would end?

Do you remember what happened? Do you remember how we all came together? Do you remember how there were flags hanging from almost every overpass? Do you remember how, for a little bit, there weren't Republicans... there weren't Democrats... there were Americans. I miss that.

Oh my gosh, Lizzy! That book sounds absolutely amazing! Oh, yes, He does give and take away. I'm doing a little dance right now. That quote is absolutely delicious! And your follow-up is perfect.

I can't see any of it. The wiriting on the paragraph is way small. But it does sound like it is a good book.

I'm totally going to read that book. I need to think about how to let my Christianity inform my politics in a truly Christian way...until now.

As for thought 2, I thought the same thing--that it was an accident. And you said it exactly right: the world tipped when I realized what had happened.

Love it. Gotta get my hands on this book.

Your post today, both part 1 and 2 really touched me.
I know this sounds dumb, but I have always considered Jesus to be both republican and American.
How dumb is that.
I have though, and as a matter of fact I think my sister thinks that too and I'm going to call her right now and tell her that American republicans to not hold the right to Jesus.

Ciao!

Little Guy was 2 weeks old on that terrible day. I had just sent Big Guy off to preschool and walked back in the house to see all the coverage. I sat in the middle of the floor holding my sweet baby and crying wondering what in the world his future was going to hold.

It is amazing that people think that Jesus is democrat of republican. Jesus wasn't a political figure when he was here on earth and there were way more political parties back then. Why would he be now?

I had an infant and was still sound asleep that morning. I woke to my hubby running in to tell me what happened, after the first hit. We sat wide eyed staring at the coverage and saw the second. It is eternally etched in my memory.

I was on my way to work when I heard on the radio about the first one. Then, as I got into work, we watched the second one hit on the internet. I just remember thinking, "Oh my God...we are under attack!!" Our building was then evacuated because the Attorney General was supposed to be at the Federal Building which was across the street. Then, I just remember crying the rest of the day. Just horrible. I don't think any of us will ever be the same.

Thought provoking on part 1

Part two: Born and raised outside of DC MOST of MY family and Friends commute back and forth to DC. I worked in DC MYSELF and I had just moved SOUTH to GA! ALL I wanted to DO was GO HOME to BE near MY family and FRIENDS in DC! It was amazing to see how we all worked together as AMERICANS with NO lines drawn!

911 as a HUGE meaning for me. My brother had just come up to his ICU room after 13 hours of brain surgery. He had a brain tumor removed. Yep, sitting on his bed watching the events un-fold. It was a happy/sad day for me :)

My brother is fine but our world sure has changed!

I want us to be all Americans again...when you're elected President, let's remember to work towards this common goal!

I'm with Lula and I too miss our unity. It's a shame that it takes such a tragedy to bring us together. However, as I read through many many blogs today I see that once again our Nation is United in heart and in honor of those lives lost. Remember we still have soldiers serving our country for our safety. They need to know we still love and support them on days such as this too.

this New Yorker misses the unity. A lot.

I was teaching middle school. I remember we weren't allowed to tell the kids, because they wanted the parents to tell them. So the teachers were all watching the news on CNN and whispering in the halls.

I always believe #1 to be true, but seeing it like that is an amen moment for sure!

7 years ago I was at work in Orlando, FL and remember my cubemate told me what she heard and all I could think about was how my fiance (now Hubby) was at work flying! I was sick with fear for him and the family I have in NY.

I miss that feeling of unity as well. The times were terrible, but we really came together as Americans and as human beings.

I was working and was getting ready to take the individuals I work with bowling. We were watching the TV and also saw the second plane hit. I flew for the first time in my life 9 months after 9/11. But Cheyenne refused to fly with me. She was afraid of falling out of the plane. She had seen all the 9/11 coverage, and was scared for her life. I hate it that she was so scared because she missed out on the best time of my life. I flew to Maine to meet internet friends that all had children with down syndrome. We spent a week together at a special camp just for us.

9/11 took something away from all of us, but also gave us something, that togetherness. But yes, I think we have lose it again :(

I'm pretty sure you read my account of that day. It's certainly one that marked the turn of events in all of our lives, especially the lives of our kids. And I have to agree, that it was so amazing that in that instant we were all united as Americans. If only we could remember that fact more often.

PREACH IT SISTER! You are so right...and seeing that I live near DC...that day was particularly horrible for me as I was on the phone with my Mom while she was on her way to work...and while we were talking, she saw the plane as it was descending into the Pentagon. We lost connection soon after. It was a mess and I was frantic trying to get hold of her. I did an hour or so later...but it is something I will never forget.
