If any of you follow my Facebook, you know that my beautiful Essie became a WOMAN this week. Her body has been showing signs of it coming for AGES now, so I was prepared. And given Essie's... um... dramatic nature, I was ready for the torrent of anger and emotion that would come with this unwelcome visitor (like as she's developed breasts - she hates them and plans to have them removed when she moves out of the house... wanna take bets on her changing her mind?) SO... as she told me that she'd gotten her period, she was so calm and matter of fact about it! No drama, no nothing. Totally, typical Essie. She's freaks about the stuff I DON'T expect freaking over... and she's totally cool with the stuff I think will bring on the drama.
Mr. B suggested that perhaps Essie and I should have a bit of a "Welcome to Womanhood" day to celebrate. The lovely Kat agreed to watch Gert for a few hours, and Essie and I made plans. I suggested pedicures, or hairdos, (clothes shopping was out - Essie HATES shopping for clothes)... she didn't care for any of those ideas. Then I suggested we go to the top of Stone Mountain -something she's been wanting to do for ages. While not exactly along the vein I had in mind, it was her day, so away we went.
As we were driving towards Stone Mountain, I was watching for the trams, just to point out and say "Look Essie - that's where we'll be a in a little bit"... but I wasn't seeing them. I thought perhaps I was just not looking at the right times. Pulling up to the tram entrance, we see the sign... "The Sky Lift is Closed Today".
Crap.
There were tears. We tried to think of plan B... Big Target... Ikea... Haircuts...... then I hit on it - World of Coca Cola!!!! My trusty cheap, no frills phone managed to give me directions to the place. We found it and headed in.
After checking out these cool bottles, we were let into this REAL cool area with all this neat Coke memorabilia. It was the last place we could take pictures, so I snapped a couple. I DIDN'T get one of the thing I REALLY wanted - a Norman Rockwell original painting!!!! Have I ever expressed my love for Norman?
I LOVED all the retro stuff!!!!
This is where I vent for a moment. They said at least 5 different times that this was the LAST place you can take pictures until the tasting room. And as we're walking through all these exhibits there are people snapping pictures left and right. The same thing happens at The Biltmore. Ok... I understand that it seems silly, and that in general they don't want you to take pictures because of copyrights and wanting to sell you pictures for WAY MORE in the gift shop. Yeah, that sucks. But it still just annoys me that people feel it's okay to just go ahead then and take pictures. Ok... rant off.
So our favorite area by FAR was the tasting room. They have drinks from all over the world. Our favorites were from Asia and Africa - lots of different fun flavored Fantas. Our least favorite was Beverly from Italy. Essie said it tasted like barf.
But by far, our VERY favorite was good old CocaCola from the U S of A. Here's Essie happy to try a sample
And hamming it up for the camera... in Coke Camo.
And a little proof we were there!

I was just going to mention that happens at the Biltmore! We were just there on Thursday and saw several people taking pics. Grrr...
I haven't been to World of Coca-Cola in ages! Not since I was in 8th grade, maybe 9th.
Looks like Essie enjoyed her "Welcome to Womanhood" day... yay!
Glad you and Essie celebrated and had a fun day together! She will always remember this.
How's your new job?
Good save on your special outing. That is a fun place to hang out. My kids like all the different countries' sodas too.
Don't ya love how you can always find something different to do in Atlanta.
How's the job? Time for an update!
You are such a great momma! I know she will treasure that memory forever. And maybe even do the same with her daughter someday in the very distant future.
Good luck with all the hormones!
Great pics! My dad would've loved that place; he was a serious Coca-cola collector.
i love that you celebrated! I'm so doing that with my girls. I have a feeling its going to come all too soon. We did the world of tasting thing in Vegas one year. There were 4 adults and 3 kids and I still left sick. SOOOOO much soda! Glad you were able to quickly switch gears and make it a fun day despite the closed lift.
There is a Coke "hut" at Epcot where you can do the around the world taste test. It was fun to trick the girls into trying Beverly and taking their pictures :-)
what a great way to bring her into womanhood!
Aw, what fun!!!
Oy Vey - congrats to your woman.
mine is not far behind...and that scares the crap out of me.
I'm jealous. I never got a womanhood celebration and I've been dealing with this crap for over 20 years.
Although it wasn't what you had in mind, she looks so happy to spend that special time with you:-)
Welcome to the club Essie! Looks like you gals had a blast painting the town red! Ok, was that in poor taste? I meant red from the Coke. Oh brother, I'm being quiet now.
I was just saying that I want to come back and take my kids to The World of Coke, and Underground, the Varsity, and Stone Mountain- of course we would have to hike it to the top....
And to see you and Kat.
Welcome to womanhood, Essie! :)
ahh....the Beverly. Gotta love the Beverly. LOL the best part of that drink is getting some unsuspecting "schmuck" to drink it by going on how GREAT it is!
Dh totally fell for it....and the look on his face was PRICELESS. Of course I had had to drink a bit of it without making a face...but BLECH.
It actually reminded me of a very dry, bitter tasting alcoholic drink....and yes...barf is a good description.
and I love this idea, and I'm so glad she didn't freak out.
How fun!!! Looks like you guys had a great day after all!
I believe my mom handed me a box of pads and that was that. Not so fun.
Brandy, don't feel bad, I did not get an end of womanhood celebration. I think that is far more to celebrate.......just look forward to it and throw yourself a huge party.
Liz, great way to have special time together. I loved the Mexican coke. Still do in fact. It is just to expensive to buy.
If you watch who is taking the pictures after they are asked not to, they are usually from a country considered to be in the far east. If they are, they just act like they did not understand. I see it all the time. It really torques me.
YOU are such great MOM! What fun to have the day together just the two of YOU!
It sounds like you guys had a great day! And I'll lay my bet on her eventually deciding to keep her breasts. I never had a problem getting boobs, it was the having-my-period-every-single-month that I hated.
Which is why I asked for a hysterectomy for my 15th birthday. Luckily my parents were never good at getting me what I asked for ;)
guess I forgot to sign in when I posted my comment. Do not like anonomous comments and try to not leave them, but sometimes I get in a hurry. Sorry.
