And then there were 7.
(First - have you seen this? You MUST MUST MUST)
In order to avoid the disaster of next week, only two judges will judge each contestant... which... i guess is okay. Randy's such a non-entity in judging that I feel bad for people who get him.
Quentin Terrentino is their "mentor" tonight... interesting. I'm not a fan of his, but I do admire his talent. I'm not quite sure how he fits into this whole music thing but apparently he's a big fan.
All the contestants are on the stage and I can see it's a good thing I bought a new black marker. They're ALL in various shades of black, white and gray. Blah....
Allison is up first. She's singing I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing. Which I'm excited about because it's one of Mr. B's and my favorite songs. She's got her usual spikey hair, and belted jacket and hip/arse poof. Whoever dresses this girl really doesn't do her any favors in that area. She sounds especially smokey tonight, like she's got a little of a throat issue. She of course does a good job with it... it's a perfect song choice for her. I do have to agree with Simon that there's some sort of likability issue with her. But then again, did you hear her mom say last week that she took her to the doctor because she TALKED too much when she was little? There's some weird stuff going on there. Paula says Allison has sauce. Simon says it was hot & spicy bbq sauce and the only hope left for the girls in the competition.
Anoop - Singing a little Every Thing I Do... great song... a little over done in my mind but still good. Anoop of course has his frat boy clothes on. But the shirt IS plaid so we'll give him extra credit for that. You know it's hard when they have to shorten the song, to know if they've messed up the words or if that's just how it's edited. Well... that was a good performance. Anoop does well on the slow ballads... Randy for-me-for-yous a couple times... blah blah blah. Kara says he's found his place.
Adam - Back in full leather and goth form singing "Born To Be Wild".... oh, the screeching opportunities. So... he rocks it, but it's my least favorite performance of his so far... he definitely had some pitch issues... and and... really... the screeching is just getting boring. I want to know who does the lighting and all that for the contestants... it seems like Adam always gets the full treatment that the others don't get. Paula thows a bunch of cliche's at him and Simon says some people will like it, some won't, because he's messing with a classic.
Matt - Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman - Mmmm... another Bryan Adams... it's a great song... and he's going for a nice version of it... good piano playing by him... ooo.. a few clunker notes... but in general some nice emotion. Randy says he needs to leave the melody alone a bit. And Kara doesn't like that he can't find himself (but yet gets annoyed with other people for not trying other stuff... jeesh)
Danny is up next... or at least I think... he's sans glasses tonight... what up wit dat?? He also really needs an iron for that jacket. Kori correctly called that he's got a bit of a Miami Vice vibe going. Danny's singing "Endless Love"... He's got a harp up there... which is beautiful... whose idea is that?? Honestly... I feel a little bit like Danny's trying to wap us over the head subtly with the sad songs that remind us that he lost his wife. Am I too cynical? It's very possible. But however, whatever, he did it well. Paula loved it. Simon thought he sang it well but wished it was more unique, not so "standard" a version.
Kris is up next... my Kris... my beautiful boy... singing one of my new favorite songs "Falling Slowly"... if you don't know this song you MUST find it... oh... he's singing it beautifully - softly and sweet but yet powerful and for ONCE the backups aren't screwing up the harmony. Oh... so beautiful.... Randy didn't like it but he's a giant boob. Kara says it's one of his greatest moments. And she is RIGHT and they're running late AGAIN... JEEZ why can't they figure this out.
Okay... we're ending the night with Lil singing "The Rose"... oh Lil. Really? You keep telling the judges you're going to listen to them and you never do... maybe this song seems fresh if you're under the age of 30, but I haven't heard it in 20 years and I'm STILL sick of it... But I'll leave my mind open because she's going to "gospel it up".... and it starts like it should... and the "gospeling" doesn't work... and it all just lands flat and doesn't get anyone excited. At least she's dressed in a fairly decent outfit - black pants and vest... and a VERY bad last note. Oh Lil.... Paula says she could not have sung a more beautiful lyric but really doesn't make sense. Simon says he's disappointed again. Lil says she put her own bit on it (but not enough if you ask me)...
So again, it is finished.
Bottom Three? Lil, Matt & Anoop. Going home? Lil.
Ok.... little bonus tonight... here's the lyrics to Falling Slowly, and I'll put it on my player...
I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You'll make it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along

Looking forward to watching west coast time! Love you previews as always!
Loved the link. I wonder what became of her.
Your drawings are the best, Lizzy. I don't have time to blog AND watch TV, so it never occurs to me to turn it on for AI--but I love your reviews anyway!
That clip was amazing! I was half expecting her to be really bad. Of course, I think that is what they were setting us up for.
I love Once. I could listen to the soundtrack all day.
Girl, I saw the Susan Boyle performance yesterday and was laughing out loud at Simon's expressions. She showed him! It was awesome.
As far as your rundown on the show went, I again agree with you. Adam was way screechy and you're right about the lighting. My favorite was Kris' even though I didn't know the song, but it was beautiful. I think Lil's going home. She just isn't cutting it from week to week.
I just love you and I am so glad you watch AI with me.
Love the stick figures!
You know I gave up on AI when that Hicks dude won. But I am always down for your drawings...you are my favorite cartoonist. In the world.
Yes, Susan Boyle, I just watched her this morning and I cried. What a sweet lady with an incredible talent.
Now AI...I thought Anoop did really well and he's never one of my top picks. Of course I love Adam's screeching and just giggle everytime he does it, so I loved him. And KRIS..oh my...I LOVED him last night. I don't know what Randy was smoking when he said it was pitchy. I rewatched it just to see if I missed something, and I thought it was even better the second time. I sure hope Lil gets her li'l round booty voted off tonight. She is just not good. Poor girl, but she just doesn't have it.
Awesome recap -- as always!!! I don't even watch the show anymore because I like your recaps so much more - and it's on at the same time as Biggest Loser and I'm totally addicted to that darn show!! I do watch the results show though so your recaps get me all ready for that. Thanks again!!
Gah - Lil has got to go! She is the worst that is left.
Adam is my FAVE ~ but last night's performance was not. Oh, well.
I was out trying to con homeschoolers into taking Latin so I didn't watch until today.
And Danny has been my favorite from the beginning. But I think you are right. I don't know what he is thinking lately. And where were the glasses?! I wonder if it's because Tarantino said he needed to make a connection with his eyes? There are so many songs that are better than that one.
I got mad that Simon said he should have done what David Cook did last year with Lionel Ritchie's "Hello." But. Ummm. Hello...David Cook was doing someone else's version. It wasn't original at all.
I think that this is the first week that I have liked Kris. I love that song!
And yep. Lil so needs to go. I cannot believe that she thought "The Rose" would be a good idea at all!
I was thisclose to posting that vid on my own blog... Simon's face throughout her performance is priceless. Especially that little sigh and smile he does at the 4 minute mark... love that.
This was my least favorite week.
I agree....Lil...gone.
Love "Falling Slowly".
Okay .. so I thought you said Randy didn't like that Kris had giant boobs ..
And here I was wondering how I missed *that*
Seriously, I had to read it three or four times. I'm still giggling =-)
I just posted about Susan Boyle on my blog. What a voice!!!
Also a perfect example of why one should never judge a book by it's cover..
You know what, Lizzy? Your drawings for this week truly dance on the path to greatness.
:D
I cannot WAIT until Adam does disco. The possibilities are endless...............
