Lula was talking about the trophies we moms (and dads) earn. I think my Trophy moment as a mother came when Essie was about two-and-a-half.
We were living with my Dad and Julie, and it was a Friday night. Dad called and said he wanted to take everyone out for dinner, and being the doting Grandpa that he was (and still is) he asked that Essie pick the restaurant.
So I knelt down in good mommy fashion (you know - face-to-face communication) and asked where she'd like to go out to eat.
"The Froggy Store"
Um.... hmm... Froggy Store. We were living in San Diego, and there are a LOT of restaurants around there, but nothing called The Froggy Store. I thought maybe she meant Friday's, because they have all the stuff on the walls and maybe something was a frog. So I said "You mean Friday's?"
"No, The Froggy Store."
So I tried a different tactic. "What did you eat at The Froggy Store?"
"Chicken."
Oh yeah, helpful... cause she ate chicken EVERYWHERE we went.
Ok... next try. "Who did we eat there with?"
"Gramma & Grampa"
Oh yeah... narrowed it down nicely... not.
I could not for the LIFE of me think of what she meant. We ended up going to a different place (MUCH to Essie's chagrin) simply because I could never figure out what she meant.
A few days later we were driving down the road, and we passed The Olive Garden. And then it clicked. "Essie, " I said, pointing at the building, "Is that The Froggy Store?"
"YES Mommy!!! That's it!!!"
Anyone want to make a guess here? On the kids place mats at that time, they had little green olive characters with eyes on them, and they did resemble a frog. Thus... The Olive Garden was The Froggy Store.
Now Gert tried to get me the other day. She wanted to watch the movie with the Teenagers in the Rain.
Um.... yeah. Teenagers in the rain. Um.... Say Anything? No, we don't have that one. (BAD me... I need that one on DVD)... um...
"Gert? I'm not sure I know what you mean."
"You know Mommy, the teenagers singing and dancing in the rain."
Thinking... thinking.... thinking.............
DING DING DING
"Gert, do you mean the Sound of Music?"
"Yah Mommy!! That's the one."
Thank you... thank you very much.
So you Mom and Dad types, what kinds of Toddler/Kidesse have you been able to decipher? Do you have anything that you still say "wrong" even though your kid has grown up? Do you like The Olive Garden? Which Von Trapp child is your favorite? Did you secretly have a crush on Rolf like I did?
OH - AND GET THIS - I got a paycheck from Wachovia today!!!! I called to make sure it was legit and it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Happy PAY DAY to YOU! Congrats on your mommy deciphering abilities too. Gotta love that special talent God blessed us with. Did you ever imagine you would be able to say you were a language interpreter?
Teenagers in the rain...oh, that's hilarious. I would have NEVER guessed Sound of Music. My mind instantly went to Step Up 2, with it's amazing finale--a smokin' hot dance number that's not fit for Gert's eyes just yet.
I've never had to decipher anything like that, but when Libbey was 2 she said the words "vanilla" and "Diego" as "tu-nilla" and "Tu-ego." We have no idea why. She's never had a speech impediment. But to this day we all still say tu-nilla and Tu-ego. 'Cause we are serious nostalgia waxers.
Yes, I love The Olive Garden, but they all closed here. I keep saying when we visit my sister we are going there to eat.
As far as using kids words,
BupBup is bath at our house, it started with my oldest daughter, and it just stuck. We all call a bath a BubBup.
Fun post!!I kept seeing your picture around and wanted to stop by and say hi.
So funny! I still have issue deciphering my 6 year olds wishes and my 2 year old turns into "Rainman" when he wants something...he just repeats it over and over until we get it. If we don't, he throws things at us.
BTW, thanks for getting my humor!!
I heart Olive Garden! Infact we just ate there this week for Natives 5th Birthday! He Hearts it more than I do!
Yes I have to decipher lots but I can not think of something at the moment...I am so cold here that It is freezing my brain!
Sound of Music...Love IT! NOPE no crush on Rolf.
Happy Thursday! OOO Happy Pay Day GIRL!
Bwaha .. I'm with Lula. I was totally thinking Step Up 2.
When KayLynn first started saying, "I love you" she said it "LoveEE" and Vivi now says it, "Wov OO"
So, you'll frequently hear Kelly and I yelling back and forth through the house, "LoveEE!" .. "Wov OO too!" =-)
Happy Pay Day!! I loved the little one--Gretl, wasn't it?
And we still have Grandpa Crackers. You know, to make our s'mores.
The only time I can remember having to translate was when Katie asked me to sing her the "people dance" song. I had no freakin' clue what she was talking about. And I have no idea how I actually figured it out, but I did. It seems that when Michael put her to bed, rather than prayers, he sang "American Pie" to her. He knows all the lyrics. And she did at the time. And that is one of the phrases in the first stanza.
As for saying things wrong, we still say spidashios instead of pistachios.
I do like Olive Garden. They have a very yummy birthday cake. But I don't think that there are any left around here.
I like the Sound of Music...but I don't think I saw it early enough in my life to form an opinion about the children. Or have a crush on anyone. Madalyn won't sit through it...and I don't think that Katie has seen the whole thing.
You are a genius to decipher the toddler-ese so well. The Froggy Store... I love that!
haha
You have to love the age where their little brains can think, but their little mouths are not so great at translating it :)
when I used to do daycare I had a girl who held a tv remote control like it was a blankie she called it "Mow-Trow" I STILL call it that and that was like 20 years ago LOL
messy used to say "Amanda Amanda!" all the time but I never did figure out what that meant LOL
I'm sure I told you this BB (before blogging)
Mapboy was a little guy mostly he spoke a lot and no one could make out much but good old mom :) We were at the Home show and I had to use the ladies room so we stood in line it was so noisy but when our place in line got to move into the bathroom where it was quiet he saw a light switch on the wall...he was obsessed with light switches, loved to play with them
and point them out only thing is the sound of "L" came out like a "W" and well whenever he tried to say a complex sound like the "sw" in the word switch it came out like a "B" so yes when he said "mommy it's a light switch" it came out "mommy is a white b*tch"
I still blush when I think about it there where out 15 woman in that room and each one gasped and after I repeated the correct pronunciation back "Why yes that is a light switch!" they every one of them laughed :)
I love the Olive Garden Messy likes it because Garfield likes it, but DH hates it, and it's pretty expensive so we don't go often but I love it :)
It's been too long since I saw Sound of Music so I can't really remember.
congrats on the paycheck
Olive Garden is my fave :)
I love that Olive Garden is the Froggy Store!! Too funny:-)
My two year old's speaking skills have me pulling my hair out right now. There are like 384092840 different words that sound the same and if I don't get it right, he gets so mad! So right now, I am trying to decipher everything out of little man's mouth!
This is a game that I play daily!
When Beetle was small, she would always want to go to "Blue Town" which I figured out was WalMart. I know how that makes you cringe. bwahaha!
I didnt have a crush on Rolf, he made me mad. But the oldest girl was my favorite!
Isn't it funny how their little minds work? And entertaining!
My daughter isn't really old enough for the kidese, she really only says one word other than mama: kitty. Which she calls everything, including her daddy. It's cute.
I DO like the Olive Garden...but I like The Pasta House better (its a local chain).
I still don't understand Z half the time....and it upsets him a lot...so I better get on this quick!!!
Congrats on your legit check!!! hahaha Those are the best kind!
When M was 3, her preschool had Noah's Ark-something-or-other come in... it's like Build-a-Bear. Anyway, the kids got to make a bear... she came home with it and it's "birth" certificate.
Written on the paper as the name of her bear was "Lavakle".
La-VA-kle?... I said.
No... said M... LAVA-kle.
HUH????
It was a day or two later when it hit me what she had named the bear... 'cause the movie was back on, a movie that she had just seen a few days before.
The Adventures of Shark Boy and LAVA GIRL.
Pay day is always a good day! I love Olive Garden's breadsticks and salad. I may be addicted.
Congratulations on the paycheck. Make a photocopy and frame it!! Spend it wisely.
Love the Olive Garden.
One time when Reed was 2 we went for ice cream. It was about the first time she was able to "pick" her own. She told me what she wanted, it made sense to me (this is how she always referred to it) so when I got to the counter, I asked for "pink ice cream." The very young girl working looked at me like I was crazy! I'm sure a mother would have automatically knew to get me strawberry!!
Allie, my younger girl, has always changed names of places to eating. The "red roof place" was found to be Fazoli's and sometimes she would request a place based on the colors in the bathroom. Yeah, she was fun to try to please at times!!
My all time favorite was Samuel's "I want to eat at Jumpers."
Our clues:
1 - It was a LONG LONG LONG way away.
2 - We ate there with Papa and Juju.
3 - He had something yummy.
Jumpers.
It was Ihop, and it was like 5 minutes down the road. LOL Guess 5 minutes is a LONG LONG LONG way away when you are 3. We still call it Jumpers. ;)
My favorite - which wasn't hard to figure out but it took a few minutes due to pronounciation. Pickle jelly. That is now our family name for relish.
My son loved Peter Pan when he little. Mr. Smee what his favorite and he had to have a ham sandwich when he watched this movie. Then he would always say, I want some smee, when he wanted a ham sandwich. One day my MIL was babysitting and she could not figure out what he wanted. She called me at work saying she could not figure out what he wanted to eat. He kept saying he wanted smee. I told her he wanted ham and she said, "of course, why didn't I know that?"
Another was Noodle Roni. My kids always called them sloppy noodles and to this day we still call them sloppy noodles. Weird, huh?!
Liesl was my favorite Von Trapp. I love that movie.
Congrats on your paycheck!
My moment came when Cheyenne asked for a scution. When I asked her to describe a scution she said "Doctor puts drape over you and scution". I'm still loss, so I say "Show mommy what would happen to her if she had a scution" Cheyenne comes over and says "Doctor put drape on you , cut your belly and baby comes out!"
