That I post twice in one day, but it's not often that I get QUITE this hot under the collar.
Surely, unless you are under a rock, you have heard about this lady in California who had the Octuplets. And how she already has 6 kids. And they're ALL from infertility treatments. And she's not married. And... and... well... if you don't know - read here.
I'll wait while you catch up.
Now - let me put the legal stuff out there. I KNOW we don't know the whole story. And well.. that's about it.
SUPPOSEDLY all 14 of these children have been the result of invitro fertilization. Now, if you aren't able to conceive, and you want 14 kids, and you can AFFORD that kind of capital outlay, then go for it. But I'm completely beyond ticked off in this case because where in the SKEE-DEEDLE is she getting the money for this stuff?
There are women out there - bloggy friends even - who would walk through FIRE to have a baby, but they can't afford the treatments that would hopefully give them one. And this woman can do it... well... at least 5 times maybe??? WHAT THE FRICKADILLER?????????
I realize we live in a country where we can do pretty much anything (well... except drive without a seat belt and not use a hands-free device) and I like that about our country. But when Child Protective Services can invade a home because a pissy MIL says it's "messy" then how the schmeck can a doctor implant 8 embryos into the single mother of 6 kids???
I'M NOT SAYING A SINGLE MOM CAN'T HANDLE 14 KIDS. Please don't read that. But she's (again - supposedly) already on public assistance... why should she be allowed to suck more money from the system??
I see that she's asking 2 million for her story, and wants commercial deals and stuff. And what bugs me more than her asking is that some stupid company that just asked congress for a bailout is gonna PAY her for it.
ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know that she pretty much has the right to do what she wants, but I have the right to be flugged off that she did it.
Ok.... so tell me what you think. Do you think she should have been allowed to do IF again? Should the children be punished for the actions of the mother? Any other thoughts/vents/rants?

Bruce and I were having a conversation about this very subject last night. I too, am ticked off!!
Friends say that the woman is "obsessed" with children. Great!! Her own mother is ticked off, and says when she brings the babies home, she will be gone.
I bet you dollars to donuts, this woman was thinking she would get a TV show, like Jon and Kate, or those people with 18 children...I hope and pray that she is not rewarded for her mental illness.
This is ridiculous. My heart goes out to those 14 children-7 and under..who are the product of their mothers OBSESSION.
I am completely outraged by this story! I can understand wanting a child trust me I do but I just don't get this. Really, what an irresponsible doctor! This just sickens me.
I truly do not understand this story. Every time I read a news article about it - seriously, EVERY time - their story has changed. I've read everything from the mom is and has always been single, to she's married but her husband is a carpenter in Iraq, to she's married but her husband left them, on and on. I don't get it.
Yeah, I too think this story is a little fishy. Why in the world would you want anymore children when you had SIX at home already???
And how could she offord the treatments? And why is she living with her parents, what happened to the father?
Too many open ended questions. In answer to your question, I don't think she should have been aloud to do IF, but I don't think the state or the hospital could have any legal way of stopping her. If I were her doctor I would have made her get approval from a pscychiatrist ya know?
Grrrrr!
That ticked me off so bad!! I hope no one will pay her for the interview, sponsor her, or do a show, but you know someone out there will do it-just so they can make money off of it. That makes me even more mad about it. If she's going to have babies like puppies, then someone should neuter her. Just my opinion!
This story sickens me, I'm in CA. So it's all over the radio-- I heard today that she'll sell her story for 2 million, so his was all about making money for her, using babies... it's disgusting. AND how can a Dr in their right mind do this?? I don't think she should have been allowed. I also heard that her dad paid for the the I.V.F
I am so glad my tax dollars went toward this. I think the woman is out of head ...and a greedy little $%#@...but what is more wrong is the doctor's who acted irresponsibly. Are they holding out for their story $ TOO?
It just gets your goat, doesn't it??
Apparently, her mother said that she has been obcessed about having kids since high school. Why should we (the tax payers) have to support her invitro habit? Are we supported all habits now because I was thinking of taking up gambling.
This is from the article you linked:
"She told me that all of her kids were through in vitro, and I said 'Gosh, how can you afford that and go to school at the same time?"' she added. "And she said it's because she got paid for it."
Dude, if she gets $2 million to appear on Oprah...
IMO, I think the woman is a nutjob. Her own mother calls her "obsessed with kids"... so what doctor would implant this woman with 8 embryos?!?!!???!
I'd also heard that her father went to Iraq to get a job as a contractor or something... so as to get more money for the family.
I'm with you guys. Something just sounds fishy. Her child's caregiver said she told her someone was paying her to do this? No legitimate doctor would implant 8 embryos.
If a person has embryos that they don't want to destroy, they can actually put them up for adoption. I know of an infertile couple who adopted embryos and had twins.
Okay, this might not be the popular opinion, but I think you can't control crazy, but you also shouldn't add to the chaos. What I mean is, this woman can WANT as many children as possible, but that doctor is to blame for willingly putting those embryos in her. My guess is that whoever he or she is, they weren't the first doctor the mom went to, because an ethical doctor would not do that procedure. SO, my 2 cents: the mom is crazy, but not to blame. The doctor is to blame. So is anyone who enabled her to get all these kids.
I am a SAHM with 4 kids, and a VERY supportive husband. I can barely make it most days. How in the world is she supposed to give those kids the care they deserve?
Don't start sending me hate mail or anything, BUT, I do believe that welfare and involuntary, temporary sterilization go hand in hand. Can you say NorPlant?
I tend to be an incompassionate right wing nut job, though. I guess I learned it from my mother.
WOWZA,I didn't know all those details...whew....that's messedup.
Totally Agree! This is wrong on so many levels not to mention those poor poor babies and the OTHER 6 at HOME already!
As a woman who has struggled with fertility and lost I know how it feels to want a child of your own. That said, had God blessed me with even one of my own I would have counted him/her as an endless blessing not gone on for 13 more at other's expense. I am thrilled I have been given the blessing of my daughter through adoption. As many of you know, she is the LIGHT OF MY LIFE! My husband and I are completely flabbergasted for lack of a better word at the entire situation.
I'm with Bird, above. This is so unfair to her FOURTEEN CHILDREN. Oh my.
I'm grateful for my one. We would love to have another, but can neither afford to adopt again or do fertility treatments. Sigh.
I'm flugged off too!!
every single thing about this disgusts me. I feel so very sorry for her children. Knowing they are simply for their mommy's amusement and financial gain.
I can not imagine living in a 2 bedroom house with my 2 kiddos, let alone with my mom and dad and 14 kids. I hope that the authorities are looking into this because that does not sound sanitary or healthy.
I hope beyond hope that the kids (all 14 of them) find some sort of love and peace in the world.
What the heck...UGH. What is wrong with her??
I may be repeating what someone else has already said, but she acutally works for the fertility doctor, thats how shes getting all of the treatments, HE Should be arrested....i agree....its horrible, just horrible!!
I agree with you and I feel so sorry for all those kids. I think she did it to get attention and thought she'd get a t.v. show from it. I hope she gets zilch! But I dont want the kids to be without.
Unless that mom is Angelina Jolie with millions at her disposal, NO, a single mother can't raise 14 children. It just isn't possible. Financially or physically. And to be getting public assistance for it? Freaking insane. I don't understand how we have some pretty strict rules for adoption but IVF seems to be unregulated.
This has been an ongoing hot topic for us at work. We have discussed every aspect of the situation and just can not understand it.
I think it is ridiculous, I feel sorry for the children. It's not their fault, but they don't have much in the way of a bright future unless someone steps in and helps out.
I am a single mom, in a two bedroom home (one bathroom) with only two (older) kids. There is NO WAY I could take care of that many kids in this same environment and still be sane.
As much as I hate to see her get all the publicity, money, etc. that she so obviously counted on, I hope that we get to see how this all pans out and it does not disappear from the news. I am too curious now.
Ok, I haven't had a chance to read the rest of the comments, yet, BUT how can she be on public assistance AND afford IV??? Disgusting!
Ain't it the truth!!! My goodness- I know of couples in my town that would love to have a child - just one - but for whatever reason can't seem to get pregnant and then I hear this story. It is terrible and those kids will be the ones to suffer!!
Hot topic. I'm one of those that thinks we should have the freedom to make our own life choices and the government should not interfere, and others should not judge. HOWEVER, I also think we should be responsible people. I'm not catching a sense of responsibility on this mother's part. And that saddens me. Also, I feel like the doctor who agreed to implant 8 embryos subjects himself to ethical questions.
I love you for addressing this...and I agree with you. And I still refuse to watch Oprah, on principal alone.
Oh, girl do NOT get me started. I have major issue with this woman. I'll just come on out and say it...having that many kids is irresponsible. It ticks me off and what kind of doctor let her do this???? I think it's ethically wrong!!
I could go on and on. I agree with absolutely everything you said.
True confession. I get the vast majority of my news from clicking headlines on my google home page. I have refused to even open one article about this whole thing. I know nothing. Sometimes ignorance IS bliss.
My thoughts EXACTLY!! Where did the money come from??? Most people have a hard enough time payiing to do this once let alone 7 times. And now the Grandpa is going to go back and fight for the Iraqi military to help pay for the kids. WHAT??!! This is the strangest thing I've heard in a long while. And very frustrating.
I don't know much about it, but have wondered where all the money is coming from.
I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around this story. Holy cow. I love kids, and I often wish I had a few more. But 14? Holy cow.
Holy cow.
Oooohh... this story makes me want to spit!! Just like millions of other mamas out there, I am a single mother to one, just one!, and I still can't figure it all financially sometimes. How the heck is she going to do it??! Ugh.
The whole story just sounds off somehow.... from all her pregnancies being in In vitro, to the fertility doctor implanting 8 embryos, to her surviving on public assistance. It is all so weird.
Yeah, I'm quacked about this gal, too. In addition to being costly, I'm told that In Vitro can be painful. And where were the doctor's ethics while all of this was going on?
Enough said. There is nothing I can add. Great post Lizzy.
Gina, are you calling me a nut?
Ok, just came back to say this:
The mother is now looking for a job as... GET. THIS.
A TV. CHILDCARE. EXPERT.
How on earth does the afford fertility treatments while on public assistance? I am baffled. Very strange!
This story makes me so angry, but you expressed it much more tactfully and without expletives than I ever could. Kudos to you!
Oh this burns me up too...so much about it doesn't make sense and I've heard that she already has a book deal and people willing to pay for her interview...just sick...I feel bad for the children....
I too am outraged about the whole story. First, of all what doctor in their right mind would have done this for her. Secondly, how did she pay for the treatments. They are NOT cheap and they are not normally covered by any insurance plan I've ever seen.
I'm sure this is her "get rich" scheme since she already has more than one publicist.
I hate that the money will come to her. For her bad decisions, and her greed.
I think all of her children should be rescued. And yes, I think it's that bad. Especially since the major companies who usually come to offer assistance (Huggies, Emfamil, etc.) are distancing themselves as much as possible because of all the bad press.
If the mom was counting on the kindness of strangers and the handouts of companies to help with these kids, I think she bit the hand with this mess.
Makes me very sad.
*sigh* While I hope the children don't suffer I hope anyone who pays her for her dubious parenting advice loses every dime and more.
I for one will not support any tv/magazine/book/newspaper/web based companies that sponsor that type of irresponsibility.
