Mish-Mosh

I don't have any particular thing to write about today... so you're going to get a conglomeration of thoughts and questions.

Question #1 (Lula - I expect your input on this)... what's with the hair bows on little girls in the south? Whenever I go to the girls school, all the little girls have these huge bows on their head. We don't do that in Minnesota... (do we Minnesota girls?? Midwest ladies???). I'm not talking just little bows, I mean... big ones. I know my grandma wore bows like that back in the day, but... I don't get it. I'm not knocking it, I'm just trying to understand... so someone.. please explain.

The Truth Comes Out #1 - My boss told me what my new title will be - Branch Operations Specialist 1. Yes. BOS1. Fitting don't you think?

Yah #1 - I get free lunch today!

Go check it out #1 - ever used Restaurant.com... go check it out... and use the code SANTA and you'll get 80% off... I'm about to go get $100 worth of Gift Certs for a local stir fry place for $8.

Yah #2 - Mr. B is coming this weekend for my company Christmas party.

Boo #1 - I have NO idea what to wear.

Update #1 - I haven't heard anything back from John Bernau, but I did sent the blog to my music teacher, and got this reply:

What a joy to read this, Beth. Correcting our mistakes, regardless of time passed, is such an admirable thing. John was a very bright boy, and you are right, he had some very tough issues to deal with. As I train teachers now, one of the things I try to instill in them is being an advocate for every student, and making every student feel safe. Middle and high schools are such tough environments. Great to hear from you, especially this kind of message at this time of year. I have always loved that Christmas Carol, and now I have another reason to.

Question #2 - Some people call me Lizzy. Some people call me Lizzie. Which do you prefer?

I think that's all I have for now... but it's very possible that this will be a more than one post kind of day.

Wait!! I thought of something else. One time my Dad and I were walking and talking about colors men wear. His brother, who is a good... 7 inches taller than my dad and a good 100 pounds bigger, was walking behind us. I asked Dad if he would wear pink, because with his blonde hair and blue eyes, it would look nice. He said, "Real men don't wear pink." Then his brother cleared his throat and we both turned to look at him. Guess what color HE was wearing. Can you say "Bortherly Smackdown"? So there's question #3 - Do real men wear pink?

#1--Real mean wear pink. Especially if they know it looks good on them. My husband would look phenomenal in pink, I have yet to get him to wear it...but think he will! hehe

#2--bows in the south. I hadn't even really thought about it before. They just make little girls look SO cute! As for adults the only time I put bows in my hair is for a football game. They are just cute!!

#3--yay for Mr. B!

Nope, we midwest girls don't do hairbows.

I was always told that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Well, you certainly proved them wrong!

80% off??? Seriously? I'm so there!

You'll look fantastic no matter what you wear. You have that SMILE, remember?

*sniff* such a nice response from your music teacher.

I suppose I prefer Lizzy because that's what my eyes are used to seeing in print.

I always thought that pink looked great on some men. I know it is kind of a metro-sexual color, but it makes them look clean and kept.

Hi Lizzy(ie),

I like Lizzy, it looks interesting.

Bows in the South, I grew up in a poor area of VA, but little girls of the "old South" establishment have always worn those gigantic bows for all of my life. I never had any, but every little girl whose parents have made it do. They are part of the attire on the playground to the church. My granddaughter (14+months) has little hair but we still do bows in her hair. You will see lots of those boys in places like Richmond, Raleigh, Charlotte, Beaufort (SC), Columbia, Atlanta, Macon, Birmingham, etc.

Yes, real Southern men love pink and know that they look great in it, goes with the seersucker suit and bowtie!

I enjoy your blog! Have a great Christmas!

P.S. In the deep South (SC, GA, AL), children address elder ladies by Miss So and So (First name), it drives me crazy. I haven't been Miss for a long time, I would rather be just, "Kaye" or call me Mrs. Last Name.

My youngest wore bows up until 1st grade and sometimes it looked like some of the little girls had a competition going to see who would wear the biggest one. Don't know what the big fascination is tho, I just thought they were cute.

I like Lizzie.

My girls have a Yankee for their mama... so I've never done the hairbows thing. Mainly because I am lazy. So even though I've been in the South 20+ years, I don't know why little girls and big hair bows go together.

I have a tendency to spell names with "-ie"...
Izzie
Lizzie
Christie/Kristie
I don't know why, but I always want to write "-ie" instead of "-y"... even when I know I should be writing "-y"!

LOVE the response from your music teacher :)

Oh I wish I lived close enough to lend you something because I have a few fantabulous Christmas Party outfits that aren't getting worn this year (Hubby's company cancelled all holiday parties in light of the economy). Of course, you'd likely have to take them in......

We don't have ginormous hair bows really as a "thing" up here in NY, but Kiddo has a few larger ones and insisted on wearing one for her school photo. I'll email it to you, you will chuckle. I tried to position it as low on her head as possible to avoid that "Little House on the Prairie" look but it is still visible in the shot.

Real men *do* wear pink. My dad, husband, brothers and brothers-in-law all own and wear pink. Hubby has a few pink ties that look really great with his navy and charcoal suits. He wears lavender ties too...

Yay on the job title! You are the boss! And I spell it Lizzy as a default, unless I know someone who spells it the other way, then I use that for her. Hubby's admin asst is named Lizzy and I don't know which way she spells it - I'll have to ask him!

Going to check restaurant.com right now, I know some folks who could use some Xmas cheer and a cheaply bought gift card might be just the thing - thanks for the tip!

I like Lizzy or Lizzie...which do you like Ronda or Rhonda? My mother likes Ronda!

The little girls did not wear bows in Kansas and as far as I can tell, they don't here (Baltimore). Although with a little girl of my own coming into bow age soon, I may just start it up. Cause bows? Are seriously cute!

Britt said...

Yeah, I've wondered about the hairbow thing too. Cause I'm a midwest girl .. and I haven't worn a bow since 1990. And I was not consulted on the matter. =-)

Now you have me wondering how I've spelling your 'name' .. I like 'ie', personally. Since you asked =0)

For me, I judge a man less on what color he wears and more on how he acts. A jerk is a jerk and a douche is a douche no matter what color he's wearing .. and on the flip, a good man is a good man, even in bright pink =-)

That being said, I think my husband would look good in pink, but it wouldn't mesh with who he is .. him being a hard rock, grungy, oilmudgrease type of man.

I wish my girls would wear bows...but alas they are destined to be tomboys...

I just got an email saying you could use VARSITY at checkout for $3 restaurant gc reg$25 I think your code is wayyyy better!!!!

Oh, yes real men can wear pink. It has be to the right pink but they can look damn hot!

Tracy P. said...

Yes, it's true. MN=no hair bows. I'll vouch for you. But you CAN buy them here. It's just that nobody does.

Restaurant.com. I'm there! Thanks!

Christmas party attire. Do you have Burlington Coat Factory nearby anywhere? They sell cute glitz (with sleeves too, for people like me who've gotta have 'em) for CHEAP, for what it's worth.

Tracy P. said...

And yea, Mr. B! You will glow no matter what you wear. ;-)

Ashley said...

Thank you, thank you, thank you for that link! I've never heard about this. There are only 2 restaurants in my town on the site but I bought $10 gift certificates to each for 60 CENTS!!!!! OH, my! There is a $20 spending minimum but still... that is lunch for $10.60 instead of $20! Great deal!!

Oh, - and yes, real men wear pink.

I love bows! But I'm from a southern family so maybe it's an inbred thing -- and, yes, we are almost certain that the other inbred thing that southern folks are known for did indeed occur in my family -- just look at my cousin and you would agree! ;-)

I love restaurant.com -- I'll have to go check out the sale for sure!

Not to worry about what you're wearing for the party - he will love you no matter what you have on!

I like Lizzy with a y because I just like writing y's -- I like to curlicue them at the end and add a little star. Can't do that with an ie!

I think you should be Lizzie with big smiley faces on the 'i' dots!

Yes Bows are very popular from Virginia on Down here to Georgia. Here you will find long ribbons with initals and names or the schools for Prep Rallies. From the Smallest little tot to a Cheerleader you will see bows and long ribbons...and I adore them and I want a little girl so stick those big ribbons in her hair but I am sure she would yank them out...LOL YES the SOUTHERNS LOVE THEIR BOWS! Many of my Friends Daughters sport long BOW HOLDERS somewhere in their Bedrooms! YES BOW HOLDERS! YOU will even see little Bailey OUTFITS Sporting ribbons sometimes!

I like Lizzy...I like my stuff to end in a y...just one less letter I have to write...LOL

Don't think hairbows are a trend around here. I've never noticed them if they are. I'm not much of a hair bow girl, even if they are on little girls. Smallish ones maybe, big bows, nope. Kinda like a big ass bow on a big ass bridesmaid dress, it's just wrong.

Men in pink.....hmmmmm, what a quandry. My oldest son has had a couple of pink shirts, not baby pink pink, but pink, and they looked good on him. A pink Izod I'd have issues with on any man, not sure why, it would just bug the crud out of me. Pink on my husband....no way, no how. #1 he'd never wear it and I'd never ask him to because he'd never want to - I wouldn't want him to expect me to do something I didn't want to do why would I want to ask him to? But I just wouldn't get my jollies off seeing him in pink at all. It just doesn't fit with my image of him or who he is. Pink can be done on some men, in some ways, just not all men in all ways :)

I prefer Lizzy :) I'm a "y" kind of girl :) My middle name is ElaYne, my middle son's name is JaYson and my DD's name is AllYson. I just think that names look better with a Y in them. Plus you can never end up falling into the little hearts over the i trap *shudder*

Ok, lets see.....

Girls in the midwest wear big bows if they are Pentacostal...just my opinion

I like Lizzie....again, just my opinion

Hmm...only some men can wear pink...it has to be a really confident man that never works on cars or gets his hands in grease....again....just my lame opinion

Have a great day!!! :)

Pink was the "in" color at middle school last year. I personally thought it looked hysterically to see all these boys walking around wearing pink shirts, but they thought they looked manly!

Hubs' company Christmas party is tomorrow night and I don't have any idea what to wear either! I am hitting our local consignment shop this afternoon.

#1 - Hairbows. I don't know. I see them a lot. Along with pretty hairbow holders to organize them all. But I have never done them. Michael says that I am really a yankee having been born in Florida...so maybe that is why I can't comment on this southern thang.

#2 - I wish I had you look at a few dresses in my closet that I keep holding on to - in the hopes that one day they'd fit again. Oh, well.

#3 - Men do look good in pink. Quite...

I'm used to "Lizzy" from the Vote For Lizzy button on my sidebar. But Lizzie is cute.

WheresMyAngels said...

I love the big bows on little girls! But your right, it is not popular around here.

Real men only wear pink if they are very manly looking ;)

Lizzy!

In my family real men DO wear pink...and I prefer Lizzy! :)

I am a southern girl transplanted in the midwest so we do hair bows. I also make and sell hair bows, I just can't get enought of them. There was always a bow in my head as a child so maybe it is something ingrained in our brains at an early age. I know that I have my girls convienced that they can't leave home without a bow.

Real men wear pink.

I like ie better.

Teri said...

Real men DO wear pink. I like Lizzie, but what do YOU like?

Love these random thought posts. Keeps the brain moving, you know? :-)

Beth said...

I like "Lizzie". My name is also Elizabeth, but I go by Beth. Some people call me Liz or Bethany, or some other derivative and it makes me crazy. Now, my dad calls me Lizabeth, and that's ok. He's my daddy after all. It's either Elizabeth or Beth. But I do like Lizzie. I just don't want to be called it. I don't know why. I just don't think it fits me. I'm weird, though.

I'm not sure about the men wearing pink thing... I often wrinkle my brow and get suspicious when I see a man wearing pink.

KimmyJ said...

I'm looking for Lula's response! :) Hairbows and the South go hand in hand. It's just our thing. Like Red beans and rice or fish and grits.

Aubrey said...

Yes, real men wear pink! And oh, it looks so good!

Big bows...I've seen this on ONE little girl here in the Midwest. BUT, their family had moved to Texas for about 2 years before coming back to CO. Could be why!
