Vent(ed)

Let's begin with 2 observations:

1. According to ... um ... everyone ... our country has a problem with childhood obesity.

2. Teachers are limited in what kinds of "punishments" they can serve up when a kid isn't doing what they should.

HOWEVER

Making kids miss recess seems SOOOO counterproductive to me. As a mom of 11 years and someone who's been around kids longer than that, it seems that quite often, the unwanted behavior is a result of kids with too much energy. So why, oh why, would you put the in a position to not only NOT expend some energy, but even worse, store some up????

Apparently Miss Gert didn't get recess today because two of her classmates had some sort of issues at "Calendar Time" (something about having some trouble with addition of coins). I need to get the full story from the teacher, but I'll tell you what I know from experience. Gert is a very good student and does well in school. But when Gert doesn't get enough exercise during the day, she has trouble falling asleep. When she has trouble falling asleep, she has trouble waking up. When she has trouble waking up, she has a hard time getting it going at school, and that's when she ends up making decisions that aren't the best. So in her case, the punishment ends of punishing her at a later date.

Teacher friends... PLEASE explain to me why this seems to be a favorite form of punishment. And do you often punish a whole class because of a failure on the parts of one or two students? Am I completely off base here?

Ya know this makes me wonder if my kiddos school does this same thing! I sure would hope not because it also helps her go to sleep alot faster, they shouldnt punish the good ones!

our kids have a completely different system.
Offenders are given a "think time" they have to go to the other class and sit at the "think time" desk without disrupting the other class. They have a form to fill out, and then they return to their own class- without disrupting- and turn the form in to their teacher. If the problem continues, they are sent immediately to the "support room" where they work in solitary confinement for a prescribed amount of time.
Since I have two kids in the same grade, I always hear from one when the other has had "think time".

Elijah had a teacher like this in third grade, and it was awful! He was often punished with the class as a whole b/c of two stinker butt boys who couldn't figure out how to behave. Taking recess away from the whole class is TOTALLY counterproductive, and I think you should have a talk with the teacher and see what her views are. Maybe she uses it as a tactic at first, hoping for some positive peer pressure to fix the problem of the misbehaving kids. But you can't have an entire class missing recess all year just b/c of a couple of troublemakers.

Grrr...

Let us know how it turns out, please.

I don't agree with this form of punishment. I always feel that the punishment should fit the crime. Like how about sending home extra homework for the ones not "getting it".
And since when does having trouble understanding something require punishment? I am interested to hear the full story.

As said once today already: Guess common sense is lacking in all professions.

I can't explain why they do it, but I know it happens, and, what's worse is that those same children are rewarded with candy too! WTH?!

Another problem is lunch...students typically have about 30 to 35 minutes from the time they leave their classrooms to the time they must be back in their classrooms. During that period, they must travel to the cafeteria, purchase their lunches, eat said lunches, clean up their messes, make a trip to the restroom (if necessary), and return to the classrooms. (This is high school...I cannot speak of elementary and/or middle school.) In that amount of time, NO one's brain can process the food eaten, so kids over eat because they don't know they're full until after they return to class. High school has no recess (and PE is only required for 9th and 10th graders...), so it is no wonder we are such an obese nation!

(Can you tell this is a sore subject for me?!) Hugs to Miss Gert! What a sweet girl she is!

THANK YOU so much! This is a major pet peeve for me too.

I would say "this should be illegal", but it IS! Kids are supposed to have 30 minutes of PE a day. Since most kids only have gym once a week in school they technically NEED their PE time to fulfill this requirement.

I don't look forward to my Boy being school age! I don't get the way things are being run, etc. etc.

Hope you gives up the full story and what the teacher was thinking!
